Vacuum Cleaner Features to Consider

Suction - Whatever you have a problem getting off your carpet and floors is what should concern you when you go to look for a vacuum cleaner to purchase. A good vacuum cleaner will keep debris in the vacuum cleaner and not flying out of the bag and into the air.

Filter - If you suffer from allergies, consider a unit with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particular Air) filter. Filtration systems capture particles that would otherwise escape through the vacuum's exhaust. There are four types to look for:

HEPA-type - These filters are built like top-of-the-line HEPA filters and provide high-quality filtration but do not meet the stringent HEPA efficiency criteria.

HEPA - HEPA filters offer the best filtration, especially when used in a sealed system. Certified HEPA filters have been tested to assure the buyer that the stated efficiency rating has been achieved in a sealed system.

Standard - Standard filters retain large particles, but may miss very small particles.

Micron - Micron filters provide finer filtration and may capture particles as small as 3 micrometers at 98% efficiency. Some are electrostatic, using a charge to help retain particles.

Noise –Some models have insulated materials around the motors.

Unplugging - Another important thing to look for is how easy is it going to be to get the vacuum unplugged if something gets in the hose and plugs it. The hose will not always come completely off especially if it is a flexible hose and very long. Check and see how easy it is to change the bag in the vacuum cleaner. Ask the sales person to show you how and let you change one yourself. Then you can truly see how easy it can or cannot be.

Usability - Take the vacuum and push it around the floor, see how easy it is to maneuver and if it is light enough for you (this is important if you have back trouble). Take into consideration stairs and whether or not you want a canister or upright vacuum cleaner. If you have a one level home, this is not as much as an issue.

Attachments - Make the sales person show you how to put all the attachments on and what purpose they all are there for. Check to see if it has a long enough cord so you are not going to have to stop what you are doing to unplug it and plug it into another attachment.
